Why Garden Myths Are So Persistent
Gardening advice travels fast — from neighbor to neighbor, blog to blog, and generation to generation. The problem is that some of the most widely repeated tips are based on outdated science, misunderstood logic, or advice that works in one narrow context and fails everywhere else.
These myths are especially costly because they feel plausible. Gravel looks like it should drain. Vinegar smells like it should kill things. Organic matter sounds like it should always help. But good intentions combined with bad information can quietly set your garden back season after season.

Myth
Putting gravel or rocks at the bottom of a pot improves drainage and keeps roots from sitting in water.
Fact
Gravel layers create a perched water table that actually raises the saturation zone inside the pot, keeping roots wetter for longer.
Soil holds water through capillary tension. When a finer growing medium sits above a coarser layer, water doesn't flow freely downward — it accumulates at the boundary between the two materials until the upper layer is fully saturated. This is known as a perched water table. The gravel layer effectively shortens the usable soil column and keeps the root zone wetter than it would be with soil alone. The fix is simple: use a well-draining potting mix appropriate for your plant, ensure the drainage hole is unobstructed, and skip the gravel entirely.
Myth
Vinegar is a safe, natural weed killer that works just as well as chemical herbicides.
Fact
Household vinegar kills only the above-ground parts of a weed, rarely destroys the root, and repeated application can acidify soil and harm beneficial organisms.
Acetic acid (the active component in vinegar) works by desiccating leaf tissue on contact. For annual weeds with shallow roots, a single application on a dry, sunny day can be effective. But for perennial weeds — dandelions, bindweed, ground ivy — the root system survives and the plant regrows quickly. More importantly, repeated drenching of soil with vinegar lowers soil pH, which can suppress beneficial soil bacteria and make nutrients less available to desirable plants. Spot-treating with any weed control method, combined with smothering techniques like deep mulch, is generally more effective and less damaging than blanket vinegar applications.
Myth
When planting a new shrub or tree, you should fill the hole with rich compost or amended soil to give roots the best start.
Fact
Planting into heavily amended backfill can discourage roots from spreading into surrounding native soil, limiting long-term establishment.
When the soil inside a planting hole is dramatically more hospitable than the soil surrounding it, roots tend to stay within that enriched zone — essentially circling inside the hole rather than spreading outward. This limits the plant's ability to anchor itself and access water and nutrients from a wider area. Most horticulture guidance recommends backfilling with the native soil that came out of the hole, reserving compost or amendments for top-dressing around the plant after planting. The exception is when native soil is genuinely poor (compacted clay or pure sand), in which case modest, gradual amendment of the broader planting area — not just the hole — is preferable.
Myth
Fertilizing more frequently gives plants a boost and helps them recover from stress.
Fact
Excess fertilizer — especially nitrogen — can burn roots, accelerate pest-attracting soft growth, and leach into waterways.
Plants draw nutrients from soil in quantities determined by their biology, not by how much is available. When fertilizer exceeds what roots can process, soluble salts accumulate and draw moisture out of root tissue, causing chemical burn. High nitrogen also pushes fast, lush growth that is structurally weak and highly attractive to aphids and other pests. Established plants in healthy soil often need little or no supplemental fertilizer. Myth
Watering a little every day keeps plants consistently hydrated and happy.
Fact
Frequent shallow watering encourages roots to stay near the surface, making plants more vulnerable to drought and heat stress.
Roots grow toward moisture. When water is only applied in small amounts each day, it never penetrates deeply enough to encourage downward root growth. The result is a plant with a shallow root system that is dependent on daily irrigation and highly sensitive to any missed watering or dry spell. Deep, infrequent watering — allowing the top few inches of soil to dry out between sessions — trains roots to follow moisture deeper into the soil profile, where temperatures are more stable and water reserves last longer. Smarter Habits for a Healthier Garden
Replacing myths with evidence-based habits doesn't require expensive products or extra effort — in many cases it means doing less. Skip the daily light watering and instead water deeply once or twice a week, encouraging roots to follow moisture deeper into the soil. Choose mulch thoughtfully rather than piling it on reflexively. A 2–3 inch layer of organic mulch regulates soil temperature, retains moisture, and feeds soil organisms as it breaks down — but more isn't better. Piling mulch in a mound directly against a tree trunk — a pattern called 'volcano mulching' — traps moisture against bark, promotes fungal disease, and can eventually girdle the tree. Always keep mulch a few inches away from the base of any trunk or woody stem, maintaining a clear gap around the crown.
